Will is seventeen years old. He is a pitcher on his high school baseball team. He is also a volunteer firefighter. Will feels certain that he has control over his life and his future. Then one day Will starts to notice strange things happening. Objects move without being touched. People act in ways they don't intend to act. Will begins to suspect that he may not have freewill after all—that everything is predetermined and he is just a puppet in someone else's hands. As Will spirals deeper into this obsession, he becomes increasingly convinced that terrible things are going to happen. He is filled with dread about a catastrophic event that he feels powerless to stop. Will's relationships begin to suffer. His performance on the baseball field falters. His volunteer firefighting becomes dangerous as his focus slips away. Will desperately seeks answers. He looks to science, to religion, to philosophy. But the more he searches, the more confused and afraid he becomes. Can Will break free from his obsession and regain control of his life? Or will he become consumed by the belief that his fate is already sealed?
