In 1899, a Golem—a creature made of clay and brought to life by a single word—is discovered in the hold of a ship arriving in New York. She is taken in by a rabbi and his wife who attempt to teach her how to live as a woman in their tenement community on the Lower East Side. Around the same time, a Jinni—a being of fire and air, imprisoned in an iron flask for a thousand years—is accidentally released by a tinsmith in the same neighborhood. Struggling to understand his new world and unable to return to his own realm, the Jinni takes refuge in the tinsmith's shop. As the Golem and the Jinni encounter each other, an unusual friendship begins to form between these two mythical creatures who are attempting to navigate life in the teeming immigrant community of turn-of-the-century New York.
