The story of a wealthy American family, the Ambersons, and their gradual loss of wealth and social position. The novel focuses on George Amberson Minafer, the arrogant and spoiled grandson of the family patriarch, whose contemptuous behavior toward others eventually leads to his downfall. As the automobile industry rises and the family's horse-drawn carriage business becomes obsolete, the Ambersons find themselves unable to adapt to the changing times. George's mother, Isabel, and her suitor Eugene Morgan represent the possibility of personal happiness and redemption, but George's interference in their romance sets in motion a series of events that result in tragedy for all involved. Through the story of one family's decline, Tarkington explores themes of American progress, the passage of time, and the consequences of unchecked pride and selfishness.
